Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Look, October felt like the world’s longest month and I struggled hard: to finish reading, to write these reviews, to do anything but get out of bed and go to work. So yes, Halloween is over but we are still full on into fall, so I think the witchy reads can still happen! Don’t overlook them just because spooky season is over.
Insta-love can be a tough sell sometimes, it has to be done in such a way that the reader doesn’t feel like they’ve missed a huge part of the plot in the author's head. But when a writer does it well, creates an immediate chemistry between the two main characters that is palpable on the page, well then they’ve hooked me.
Trixie and Dominic live in a part of New York City that is magical, and not in that way that Meg Ryan describes in You’ve Got Mail. No, it is really a part of the city that is hidden from non-magical people. And in this area live the witches, wizards, vampires, elves and other mythical creators. Trixie is a down-on-her-luck witch who actually won’t use her witchy skills because she fears it will be used by others for harm. Dominic is a hunky vampire who owns the building Trixie lives in and is about to sell, which does not endear him to her. But even though they don’t like each other, there is something so there they just can’t deny it. And also, they need to join forces to save their world, so basically it is meant to be.
As I said, insta love is hard but LaManna does a great job of showing why these two, but especially Dominic, can fall for someone so hard and fast (fate??). I really enjoyed our hero and heroine but also the secondary characters and I really hope that this is the start of a series!
