In which we learn that sometimes we need to leave what we know and take the leap

Fellowship of Puzzlemakers by Samuel Burr

52 Book Club’s Summer Challenge # 7 - A Strong Opening Hook

Clayton Stumper was placed on the doorstep of the home of the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers twenty five years ago. He’s been raised by this slightly awkward group of people in the British countryside, occasionally wondering where he came from, but content to spend his days caring for the eclectic group. That is until the Fellowship’s founder and Clayton’s surrogate mother, Pippa Allsbrook, passes away. After Pippa’s death, Clayton is a bit adrift but Pippa has left him a set of clues which will lead him to his parents. She also hopes that he will take a leap of faith and go try to live his life beyond the walls of the Fellowship.

Burr layered Clayton’s story of discovery with flashbacks of the history of the Fellowship. This was a cleverly done book, interspersed with various puzzles that the reader is free to try and solve or just enjoy along with the story. I enjoyed the clues but the mystery wasn’t so much of a mystery, which was fine, this novel was more about the journey than the end result.

Why did I choose it for a book with a strong opening hook? Well, a baby in a hat box on a doorstep is a great beginning, don’t you think?
