Not the Way To Ring In the New Year

Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

In which we learn sailing might not be for everyone

Star: 4/5

This thriller is the first in Mackintosh’s new series featuring Ffion Morgan, a detective in a remote Welsh lake village along the border with England. In this installment, we meet Ffion and her family as well as English detective Leo Brady. I started the book on New Year’s Eve, which was appropriate since that is when the murder at the start of the novel takes place.

I really enjoyed the book, the setting was great, the mystery was complex enough to keep me reading, and the characters were well developed. There was just enough about their personal lives to keep you interested without it overwhelming the storyline. The tensions between Rhys Llyod, who built the high-end holiday homes, and the people of the town of Cwm Coed, is mirrored in the tension between Wales, represented by Morgan, and England, represented by Brady.

If you are a fan of Hinterland, this would be a good book for you. Not quite as dark, but I pictured the atmosphere around Cwm Coed as very similar to that in the show. I’m looking forward to the second book in the series.
