Summer Love

In which we learn sometimes small towns are pretty awesome

This was a random pick up at the library. I had seen it on Instagram and I wasn’t sure if I loved the premise, but I felt like it couldn’t hurt to check it out. The joy of the library book, you don’t like it, you just bring it back (full disclosure there are a lot of library books I bring home, never crack open, and then dutifully bring back. My reading ambitions are always too great). So this was a fun little surprise, it was such a wonderful love story.

Sage Bryd is living in the small town of Spruce, Oregon. It has always been her home and she has no plans to leave;  she has her menagerie of animals in her comfortable house. She teaches social studies at the high school and in the summer takes care of her next-door neighbor’s rented house. And this particular summer, Fisher Lange and his niece, Indy, are coming to stay. Fisher is an award-winning New York chef but he has lost a Michelin star and a bit of himself after the death of his sister, Indy’s mom. Coming to Spruce and overseeing the opening of a new restaurant in town is his chance at redemption and neither he nor Indy has any interest in staying in this one horse town. Still, as the summer goes on, Fisher and Sage are learning what it is like when you find that one person who truly sees you for who you are and loves you for it.  But what happens when the summer ends?

There is always a place for super spicy, insta-love romances but I also love a good, down home slow burn where the main characters have a bit more maturity, struggling to figure out what happens when you think you have achieved your dream and it isn’t exactly what you thought. This is the first book I’ve read by DeWitt and I really enjoyed her writing. The book was well-paced, I like how Fisher and Sage slowly got to know each other so when that first kiss happened, it burned up the page.  I’m looking forward to reading her other books.
